Preparing for the Post Holiday Clean Up

The holiday season often comes with a lot of hosting. From guests who are in town dropping by, to family dinners and various parties, you can expect a lot of socialzing to celebrate “the most wonderful time of the year.” Unavoidably, this means your carpets, flooring and upholstery can expect more than their usual wear and tear. To lessen the stress, here are some tips to assist you in tackling the increased traffic, food spills and other mishaps.

Before Hosting: Walk Through with a Guest’s Eye
Walk through your home keeping guests’ point of view in mind. You may see things you normally don’t. Declutter, dust, vacuum, and make sure the bathrooms (even the medicine cabinents- yes people will take a peek!) and kitchen are clean. Not only will your home be more inviting to your loved ones but when your guests leave, you’ll already have a leg up on returning your place back to square one.

While Hosting: Attend to Stains As Soon As Possible
Don’t wait for Aunt Linda to leave before dealing with the red wine she accidently spilled on your carpet. Give that stain some attention immediately to avoid it leaving a permament mark. Blot with a rag – don’t wipe – with a solution ratio of 2 cups water with a tablespoon of vinegar and a tablespoon of dish soap. You’ll want to get the carpet professionally deep cleaned if you haven’t been able to remove the stain yourself.

While Hosting: Wipe Down Surfaces
Even though you will being interacting with guests, stay mindful of keeping your surfaces clean. This won’t take much time away from conversation and will save you cleaning time on the back end.

After Hosting: Give your Upholstery a Once Over
Once guests have left, check over all your furniture upholstery. Again, try to attend to any food particles left or stains as soon as possible to preserve the look and condition of your furniture. Vacuum all cushions and arm rests. For stains, mist the soiled spots with a mix of ¼ cup vinegar, ¾ cup warm water, and 1 tablesoon of dish soap. From there, you’ll rub the stain with a soft cloth until the stain lifts. If the upholstery took quite a beating, you’ll want to hire professionals to get your upholstery looking good as new.

After Hosting: Do a Deep Clean
You’ve shown your hospitality and as soon as your guests leave, it’s time to once again set things in order. Deep clean by vacuuming, mopping, dusting, changing guest room sheets, and tackle the bathroom and kitchen sooner than later.
